A Wilderness Education Conference

$795 for 7 days

In this rapidly changing century, how do we guide the younger generation to stay connected with what is unfolding within them, authentically connect to others, and connect to the living Earth? Waldorf Education continues to flourish world-wide and in their efforts to build toward a more human future, many Waldorf schools are interested in developing Outdoor Education programs out of recognition of the transformative power arising from time in Nature and in Wilderness. The “Call of the Wild” conference will focus on strengthening the impulse of Outdoor Education and Wilderness Education in schools.

July 21-23

The group will gather at the beautiful 130 acre Basecamp of Deer Hill Expeditions – the renowned outdoor education center in Southwestern Colorado. With Mesa Verde rising on the western horizon, the conference will begin with a day and a half of presentations, movement and music, slide shows, and demonstrations exploring ways that Outdoor Education is flourishing in several Waldorf Schools. Together, the group will explore hands-on aspects of program development, Anthroposophical insights, Leave No Trace, logistics, safety and risk management, and leadership.

There will be the option to stay in the Loft for 50$ a night/per person for a shared room, 80$ a night/per person for a single room, or tent camping on the property for free. Mountain Backpacking

July 23-26

In the morning, the group will load up backpacks and head up into the mighty San Juan Mountains to enliven the conference through an actual wilderness expedition. In the high, flower strewn meadows of Colorado’s Southern Rockies, the group will experience all the practical aspects of leading a wilderness trip as well as furthering considerations of the importance of these transformative experiences for young people. Weather permitting, we will climb a mountaineer’s route on a nearly 14,000 foot peak.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_background” bg_color=”#1f414e” scene_position=”center” text_color=”light” text_align=”left” top_padding=”25″ bottom_padding=”30″ overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ width=”1/3″][vc_column_text]

Service at Deer Hill

Most of Deer Hill’s service projects get you working alongside Hopi, Navajo and Zuni families on projects that they have proposed. Oftentimes, host families will share cultural knowledge, stories, and arts with participants. Other service projects are conservation oriented, and arranged with the US Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management. Service projects in summer expeditions will earn you between 20 and 56 service credit hours.
